Favorite Songs of the Last Few Months
I was playing around with ways to search my past Tweets, and came across the service, Searchtastic. It does a great job searching the tweets of a specific Twitter user for keywords.
I used it to search my past tweets for the #SOTD hashtag. I think that hashtag is wildly egotistical, even far more so than Twitter is in general. Who cares what song I’m listening to today? Evidently I think everyone who follows me on Twitter does, so I continue to do it. I’ve been doing it for a while, but am not nearly as good at remembering it as I would like to be.
Using the Searchtastic results, I compiled what I think are the best Song of the Day entries from the past few months (in no particular order). Hit up the results after the break and tell me what you think of my choices, and what you would’ve added to / removed from my list (I LOVE discovering new music).
“Generator ^ First Floor” by Freelance Whales)
While not the official music video (I don’t think there is one), it is the studio version of the song, which is the best version, IMO. I love the multiple layers of slow banjo, old-school rhythm, and beautiful background vocal harmonies.
It also doesn’t hurt that it’s a catchy tune. (Thank you Starbucks)
“Hollywood’s Not America” by Ferris
The message in this song is fantastic.
“Savior” by Andrew Ripp
The studio version of the song found on the album is good, but the acoustics of the room he recorded this in are awesome. Combine that with the raw, unplugged feel of the kick drum / acoustic make this version of the song epic.
“Fireflies” by Ron Pope
This song has one of the best piano parts I’ve heard in a recent song. The whole CD is amazing, and this is the best song.
“Please Don’t Go” by Barcelona
The song is absolutely gorgeous. The swelling strings with Brian Fennell’s AMAZING vocals make this song one of my favorites.
I think this is the most mesmerizing and beautiful video I’ve ever seen. If you have a big screen. Shut the lights off, turn up your speakers and change the YouTube quality to 720p. You’ll watch it 5 times and maybe more.
As I was watching it before writing this, my 3 month old daughter, Alexis, stared at the screen for almost ten minutes. Nothing has held her attention for half that before this video.
“Neighbor” by Band of Horses
I love the band and the song, but I am not entirely sure why I like the video. I think its the amazing use of the camera’s depth-of-field, but I can’t prove it.
